MOROCCO´S SOLAR PLAN, LAUNCHED BY HIS MAJESTY THE KING MOHAMMED VI, AND FOLLOWING THE COMPLETION OF THE 580MW NOOR OUARZAZATE SOLAR COMPLEX ENTERS INTO THE NEXT STAGE

2019.06.06     From: suntrace

On May 21st, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) announced the award of the NOOR Midelt I project

Morocco´s Solar Plan, launched by his majesty the King Mohammed VI, and following the completion of the 580MW NOOR Ouarzazate Solar complex enters into the next stage. On May 21st, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) announced the award of the NOOR Midelt I project as a first phase of its new multi-technology solar complex at Midelt. The award of phase I goes to a consortium composed by EDF Renouvelables (France), Masdar (United Arab Emirates) and Green of Africa (Morocco). NOOR Midelt I shall have a highly innovative technology mix, combining solar Photovoltaic (PV) and Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) in one hybrid power plant with an installed capacity of 800 MW and 5 hours full load storage. With a tariff of 6.8 Moroccan Dirham (equivalent to 6 Eurocents) per kWh, the fully renewable project is competitive with many fossil-fired technologies such as coal or gas. Project financing shall be provided by KFW, EIB, the World Bank and Agence Française de Développement, as well as the European Commission, the African Development Bank and the Clean Technology Fund.

Suntrace in a consortium with GOPA Intec is proud to be the technical advisor to MASEN in this landmark project. On behalf of MASEN, Suntrace has developed a CSP-PV hybrid concept with 5 hours storage and has been the technical advisor during the selection process of the preferred bidder. Suntrace' Moroccan cooperation partner MENARES (Casablanca), contributed to the environmental and social aspects related to the project as well as to the industrial development objectives for Morocco.

Quotation Martin Schlecht: "MASEN is one of the most impressive sustainable energy agencies internationally. We are honoured and proud to support MASEN for Noor Midelt I in the development of a first-of-its-kind solar plant concept, combining PV and CSP with long term storage for the peak hours during the evening. It is great to see, that the price of solar energy including long term storage has now reached a cost that competes those of coal and gas-fired generation. It is a highly innovative, pace setting renewable energy concept, that also opens opportunities for other countries. In other words, as Mr. Bakkoury, the CEO of MASEN says: there will be a time before Noor Midelt I and a time thereafter..."
