A group of around 40 delegates from CSP Focus MENA 2019, paid a deep site visit to 100MW Shams 1 parabolic trough solar thermal power plant in the afternoon on June 24 Monday in western Abu Dhabi.

Led by Majed Al Awadhi, General Manager of the Project Owner Shams Power Company, Masdar, the project team gave the delegation great welcome and made detailed introduction of the CSP plant which was launched in the year of 2013.

Shams 1 was the largest renewable energy project in operation in the Middle East when launched, and also the first large-scale commercial CSP plant in that region.

Shams 1 features more than 258,000 mirrors mounted on 768 tracking parabolic trough collectors.

Covering an area of 2.5 square kilometers, equivalent to 285 football fields, Shams 1 generates enough electricity to power 20,000 homes in the UAE.

The site visit to Shams 1 is one part of CSP Focus MENA 2019  pre-conference events.
