Chile to build a 1,007MW CSP-PV integrated solar power project

2020.03.30     From: SEA

This is the Seongnam project, by the company Andes Green Company S.A., which includes the construction of a photovoltaic plant and a solar power concentration plant, which will operate as a solar thermal storage source to provide energy beyond daylight hours.

This Monday the Environmental Impact Statement (DIA) of the Seongnam project, presented by the company Andes Green Company S.A., was accepted for processing to the Environmental Assessment Service of the Second Region.

"The objective of the Seongam project is the generation of electrical energy using solar radiation through a 707 MW Photovoltaic Solar Power Plant (CSF) and another 300 MW Solar Power Concentration Power Plant (CCSP), adding a nominal power of 1007 MW for the generation of electricity that will be injected into the Interconnected System”, according to the SEA on its page.

Both projects, located 25 kilometers from the city of Calama, will have an investment that will reach 4 billion dollars, will take 5 years to build and an operation projected for 3 decades plus 2 years of closure, totaling 37 years of existence.

According to the DIA presented by the company, the project consists "in the construction and operation of a Photovoltaic Panel Plant and a Solar Thermal Plant, for electricity generation through the use of unconventional energy."

In the case of the thermosolar plant project, its design contemplates that, in normal and continuous operation, it produces electrical energy from a sole solar energy source.

On the other hand, the Photovoltaic Solar Power Plant (CSF) is made up of 2,288,000 solar panels with 310 watts of power each. These panels are divided into blocks that deliver power to 800 transformation centers, which in total provide a nominal power of 707 MW.

The thermal storage system will be integrated in such a way that the hours of electricity generation will increase, beyond sunset. With this process of thermal accumulation, the solar radiation collected and concentrated in the solar field is converted into electricity. Thus, during sunny hours, electricity generation is possible together with the heat load of the thermal storage system at the same time.

The heat from the solar field is transferred to the thermal storage medium, a molten salt fluid that collects the thermal charge, the salts that are heated from a cold salt tank to a hot salt tank, in which said charge is stored thermal.

With this storage, the plant can produce electricity after sunset, delivering a nominal power of 300 MW in two phases of 150 MW each.

These transformation centers will be able to produce 1,000 MW, connecting to each other through underground pipelines that go to a single sectioning center, from where a single 23 kV line leaves for the project substation, from where it will be delivered to the interconnected electrical system and / or to a particular client.

The project aims to promote the use of renewable resources in the area for the production of clean energy and to help reduce the generation of energy by current polluting energy sources.
