PV + Battery V.S. CSP + Storage, who is better? –hot debate in CSP Focus MENA 2017

September 13th 9:00am, Dubai time, CSP Focus MENA 2017 was officially kicked off in Dubai Shangri-La Hotel. Nearly two hundred CSP industry leaders and guests from MENA and other regions are present, including dozens of representatives from leading CSP companies in China.
Rich in solar resource, MENA is one of the world's leading solar power markets. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar Park project sponsored by Dubai government has been creating world records for solar industry since its establishment in 2012. The third stage 800MW PV project of the park has created a record-low tariff, USD 2.99 cents / kWh, and its fourth phase of the DEWA's 200MW power tower CSP project has also received a lowest tender price submitted by ACWA Power consortium in July this year---USD 9.45 cents /kWh.
"Cost reduction" has become the most concerned issue for global CSP industry, which is also an important topic in CSP Focus MENA 2017 Sep.13-14 Dubai conference. Speaking of “CSP”, another solar power technology "PV" will often be mentioned, and the two technologies “PV + Battery” and “CSP + Heat Storage” are always under comparison. Nevertheless, as one of CSP Focus MENA 2017 speakers Michael Taylor, renewable costing analyst from International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) says, “The power industry will not be dominated by only one technology. We will see a variety of technologies coexist. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, and plays a different role. Both CSP+ Heat Storage and PV + Battery will be dominant renewable power technologiesand earning great growth in the future.
Regarding the topic on CSP V.S. PV, guests on CSP Focus MENA 2017 have also expressed their points of view. “The price of PV system is an advantage now, and the future increasing number of electric cars will contribute a lot in the cost reduction of lithium-ion batteries.” On the other hand, all the panelists believed in the crucial role of dispatchability, which could greatly enhance the flexibility of the entire energy system. Moreover, the cost reduction of CSP system has also achieved amazing results in recent years. In order to realize the full value of solar energy as an important new type of energy, CSP + Heat Storage and PV + Battery will be both great solutions.
Guests involved in the discussion include Wim Alen, Senior Vice President Business Development from ENGIE, Michael Geyer, Vice President of Business Development from Abengoa Energia, Imtiaz Mahtab, Strategic Advisor to the Board of Directors from SkyPower, and Cyrille Grellier, Project Manager from Beijing Shouhang IHW Resources Saving Technology Co., Ltd. Prior to the debate, the senior officials from Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN) shared the development situation and future plans of CSP in MENA region to the audience.
